I went back and listened to the relevant ATC channel archives from that time and they don't say much. You can tell something happened, but no specifics.
Seems like every year there are a handful of crashes on they way to or from Oshkosh. I guess that's bound to happen with ~10,000 aircraft.
A father and son from Colorado had to make an emergency landing just north of my hometown (Cedar Falls, IA) earlier in the week after they lost power.
